Mega-Appearance of the Berlin Design Dome
Design should bring back memories, is how the designer Ettore Sottsass once described his designing credo. Following this idea the Geodesic Berlin Design Dome has surpassed its mission during the 47th Salone Del Mobile Milano.
From the outside designed as the Berlin TV tower and inside 150 m² of exclusive exhibition space, the Berlin Design Dome attracted the total of 270.000 guests of the most important furniture fair worldwide for six exciting days.
The concept was thrilling: Location, furniture and product design within the exhibition ‘Made in Berlin’ realised a maximum of attraction and the work of 20 young Berlin designers proved on 150 m² what the ZENDOME as the Berlin Design Dome signalled on the outside with a combined height of 15m: creativity and quality from Berlin on an international level. This was also guaranteed by the high class curators and Design Professors Francois Burkhardt and Werner Aisslinger who chose the participants from over 35 applications.
As opposed to the many exhibition areas in the Zona Tortona the objects such as the ‘Fairy-tale’ and ‘Birdy’ carpets by Reuber Henning or the bright red shelving by Adrian Lippmann could be perfectly experienced and with the possibility of an 8 meter high cupola, the lamps by Mark Braun or Ilot Ilov as well as other objects where perfectly set in scene.
A selection of much viewed chair arrangements for design classics by Parkhaus or the Swing Chair by Ulike Acker/ bomb-design where also presented suspended within the geodesic structure of the Dome.
But more than anything else the Berlin Design Dome contributed to the good atmosphere and thus to inspiring networking. While the exhibitors could make new contacts to distributors, dealers, companies, designers, architects, journalists and customers during the day, the night saw the best parties of the fair week – even described as legendary by old-timers of the fair.
The Berlin Designers are now on their way back to the capital. What will they bring? Important contacts, valuable information and the knowledge of having achieved their goal: “With ‘Made in Berlin’ and the Berlin Design Dome we have given young Berlin Designers the possibility to be part of one of the most important furniture fairs as part of a curated exhibition and at the same time to be a joint project that uses and increases the reputation of Berlin as a creative city for the first time”, says Ingo Strobel, who as member of Hidden Fortress are the initiators of this event together with Coordination Berlin and ZENDOME.
We also want to thank all those involved at this point for the very interesting and inspiring time together. Special thanks are due to Katja Hiendlmayer for the wonderful photographs.
